This is very strange, I downloaded the new source for 2.6.9r8, I compiled it myself, for the first time. It was fun but I think I got everything right, except for sound but that doesn't matter. I emerged nvidia-kernel just fine, and after it told me I coudln't have the rivirra (can't spell sorry) drivers and that I needed MMTR or something like that, support and I did what it told me to do, everything world. The kernel compiled, the nvidia kernel compiled and told me to update the /etc/modals.autoload.d/kernel 2.6 and add nvidia, and I did this. I edited grub, and booted into my fresh kernel. The modual wouldn't load on boot time, however X windows still ran, I thinkg because in my xorg.conf I have the driver as nv, not nvidia. Can someone help me? Is this a common error... any help would be welcome, thanks!

I'v downloaded gento-UT-live CD. It super, but music won't work on my PC. I'v got sis based mother board and I have to compile to kernel i8xx drivers - I can not run them as modules. So I know what files should go to this CD, I have almost everything, but the missing stuff is BOOTing from CD. Where can I find some tutorials about creating self booting linux CD?

Hello. I have downloaded a couple of clips of avi files that were encoded using xvid codec. And everytime I click on the file to open it and watch it, Windows alerts me that there has been a problem with windows and that it must close immediately.
I can play the files with no problem but Windows closes and it is annoying. I have Windows XP and have reinstalled xvid codec. What is the problem? Thanks.

I've been racking my brain for a week and a half and tried a combo of how-tos from here.

here is my problem. I have about 4mins of DV that roughly equal 650MB of data. I want to convert this to avi or divx so i can put it on the web for my family to download.

i can get great clarity but its around 20-30mb in size (too big) I can get it down to 6mb but poor quality.

i've tried premiere(too complex), videowave (drops frames), scenalyzer(very easy and great)
I like scenalyzer for capture and that goes great.

then i've tried virtual dub with huffy, divx5 codecs installed. i'm not getting the compression i need

i am using all defaults values so what am i doing wrong? where is a good how-to from start to finish?

ps... i'm shooting for 1-2mb files size with as good of a clarity as possible

and i try to ping another computer in the network.

I have a problem, i?m trying to convert a SVCD (480x480) to VCD for a few hours now .. i?ve tried TMPEGec and some others but nothing works... it crashed always at the same frame near the beginning but plays fine on my PC VCD Player (the SVCD File). I downloaded the latest version of TMPGec but nothing changed.
Someone told me to try VCDGear for repairing possible errors in the file. Well .. i tried but VCDGear tells me that it is an invalid File.....
I?m very close to throwing my PC out the window... someone please help me, i need the file converted today.

I have a widescreen TV and i'd like to take advantage of that when converting movies I download. Currently I want to take Star Trek Nemesis and convert it to widescreen format but i'm lost on how to go about that. Are there any how-to's on this board somewhere on how I can accomplish that?
